Among the outstanding milestones for 2020, is the certification of 52% of the biomass of harvest with the ASC standard; the reduction in the use of antibiotics and antiparasitics in closed cycles by 3% and 7%, respectively; the change of the corporate electricity contract to 100% renewable energy.

This week Salmones Camanchaca presented the 2020 Sustainability Report, which announces the company’s progress in the five pillars of its sustainability model: healthy and nutritious food, healthy ecosystems, prosperous communities, meaningful employment and profitable and responsible business.

Relevant milestones include the creation of a sustainability committee in charge of ensuring the execution of the sustainability strategy; the change of the corporate electricity contract to 100% renewable energy; the ASC certification of 52% of the harvest; and the signing of a sustainability commitment with its food suppliers to work with raw materials that have not contributed to deforestation, set greenhouse gas reduction goals, and use the life cycle analysis methodology to estimate and minimize different impacts associated with the manufacture of the diets used in their fish.

2020 was a year of progress and consolidation in the roadmap that Salmones Camanchaca has drawn up in terms of sustainability. Its strategy, which is structured around a model with five pillars that address the environmental, social, and governance dimensions of sustainability, has allowed the company to advance systematically in initiatives that address the material issues that it has identified as priorities.

In 2020, Salmones Camanchaca´s sustainability committee started operation (integrated by senior management and a member of the board of directors), whose mission is to validate, support, and follow up on the roadmap for the implementation of the sustainability model; sustainability criteria were included in the performance matrix of the company’s executives; indicators were defined for all material topics of high relevance; initiatives were launched on key issues associated with the pillars of the sustainability model, and active participation was maintained in instances of global dialogues on the sustainability of salmon farming.

“2020 was a year of extraordinary challenges that put to the test – as rarely before – the commitment and talent of our teams at all levels, and the ability of our company to respond quickly and effectively to unprecedented circumstances. In this scenario and more than ever, as a company we have reaffirmed our commitment to corporate sustainability because we understand that it is the way to effectively manage the risks of our business and to generate value in the medium and long term for our shareholders, our collaborators, and society”, commented Ricardo García Holtz, vice president of the Salmones Camanchaca Board of Directors.

Among the outstanding milestones for 2020, is the certification of 52% of the biomass of harvest with the ASC standard; the reduction in the use of antibiotics and antiparasitics in closed cycles by 3% and 7%, respectively; the change of the corporate electricity contract to 100% renewable energy, which will allow a reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by approximately 12% compared to the 2018 baseline; and conducting training for more than 200 employees in environmental management and compliance.

During 2020, significant progress was also made in the execution of the company’s community relations strategy, which seeks to establish a responsible relationship framework and add value to the communities where it operates. In this context, a formal channel was enabled and actively disseminated to receive complaints and suggestions, as well as a clear protocol for their resolution; risk and impact analyzes of all operations were carried out for the communities, and more than 140 activities were carried out in the more than 10 locations where the company operates. Among them, the continuation of the social investment program “Sustainable Schools” stands out, which during 2020 focused on providing support to principals, teachers, and families to facilitate the continuity of the educational process of children during the pandemic; and participation in the creation of a CLP $ 2 billion fund that delivered millions of supplies to prevent Covid-19 infections and more than 100 critical equipment for hospitals, which included clinical beds, ambulances, X-ray equipment, and vital sign monitors.

The challenges of 2020 required redoubling the support to the company’s employees to guarantee their health, safety, and peace of mind. With their well-being as a central motivation, more than 12,000 preventive examinations were carried out for the detection of Covid-19, and a telemedicine program was implemented to address the queries and concerns of the family group of each collaborator.

“In a complex period of changes in the economic, commercial, technological, political, and social levels, Salmones Camanchaca reiterates its attitude of listening, learning, and innovating for the benefit of the sustainable development of salmon farming, convinced that it is the only way to contribute to the challenge of feeding, from the ocean, a world whose population will soon exceed 8 billion people, in a way that is healthy for consumers, for the communities neighboring production, and for the environment in which we work”, García reinforces at the launch of the report.
